A planned marriage to a partner you have never seen is the most unpleasant thing that one can experience. The book focuses on girls born into and living in a world similar to Cinderella's. Two hundred years have passed since the passing of Cinderella. However, the kingdom is still practicing some old traditions.

After an age, the girls have to assemble at the annual ball where the princes will choose the best among them to be their wives. At some point, Sophia decides to escape the ball and get married to her childhood best friend instead of parading in front of suitors, which is shameful at some point.

How does this book influence your reading choice?

I loved this book from the word go, as the flow of events was vividly connected, and I could not wait to see how it would all end, making me read the last few pages in a few hours. The author uses real-life experiences where women are considered second-class citizens, and everything they truly have belongs to their father or husband. She shows how women are treated like property while others are treated inhumanely in their homes.

The women are seen to have no say in their mistreatment, and this cycle makes Sophia agitated, so she decides to break this cycle. Each year, the women in her kingdom were lined up like cattle and auctioned off at a ball. The women hope to be chosen by a wealthy husband, who will, in turn, abuse them regardless of their station. The book is unique and full of character development and world-building experiences. After reading this book, I fell in love with it because it empowers black women and shows how they can be an element of change.

An introduction to the creator behind the idea

Kalynn Bayron is the author of the book titled "Cinderella is Dead." Additionally, she is still a trained vocalist. Her work has gained fame since her first publication. She uses her intelligence to show how the women were taken for granted and treated like pieces of paper; they were supposed to stay quiet, and if not, they would be killed. By using Sophia as an agent of change, the author portrays the supremacy of black women.
